First Canoe Trip – Aquarius

Posted by on June 30, 2012

The Counselors – in – training (CITs) got to go on the first canoe trip of the summer! The girls had a true excursion as they canoed the chain-of-lakes.  You may ask, “Lee, what is the chain of lakes canoe trip??”  Well, parents and friends I am so glad you asked.   The girls started off at Chain lake, canoed through Echo lake, took a short break at Stone Lake for a refreshing swim, and they ventured to their camping destination on Sand lake.  The girls worked as a team to keep all of their canoes together throughout the trip and enjoyed cooking their dinner on an open campfire!  As a treat for all their hard work, they got to sleep in (8:30am), eat chocolate chip pancakes, and have a small canoe trip back to Camp Woodland.  We give a lot of credit to Caroline A. who canoed the whole way!  This is her first summer at camp and she gave it her all to have an amazing adventure.

They wrote a poem about their experience but you will have to read it in the camp newsletter – No spoiler alerts here!!

Camp Food!!

Food At Woodland!

Camp Woodland has one of the most phenomenal kitchens in Northern Wisconsin.  Ok, that might be a matter of opinion, but the food is quite exceptional and there is not a spot of food left on the girls’ blue Woodland plates by the end of each meal.  Our head cook is making almost everything from scratch using the freshest ingredients and camp-grown herbs.

We always comment that the fresh air in Northwoods makes us famished.  It must be all those fun activities the girls do every day. Here are just a few of the girls’ favorite meals from our weekly menu that may make our mouth water:
Breakfast:

Fruit juice, water, or milk

Hot or cold cereal

Pancakes with maple syrup

Breakfast sausage

Lunch:

Homemade Lasagna

Italian Garlic Bread (freshly kneaded and baked)

Tossed Salad (Cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots)

Dessert: Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies

Dinner:

Taco Bar!!! (Huge Hit)

Nacho Chips/Tortillas

Sliced Olives, Green onion, grated cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and salsa

Seasoned beef and chicken

Dessert: Rice Crispier Treats

*Btw – We are able to cater to girls with wheat allergies, peanut allergies, and diabetes. We also have yummy food options for vegetarians.

Campfire Night – Video Blog of the Week

Campfire Night!

Every Wednesday night at Camp Woodland we have cookout for supper followed by campfire!  The campfire entertainment comes to life by our fearless leaders “Lou-Anne and Hazel”.  Lou-Anne and Hazel are from a far off land where sugar whales and tinker bell umbrellas live in harmony.  Hazel made a splash (literally) arriving by playak to greet the girls at the waterfront.  Every week each cabin is in charge of coming up with a skit or a song for the evening.

Tonight we got a special treat!  Emily G. from Hilltop played the Ukulele and lead her cabin in singing “I’m Yours” by Jason Marz.  Check it out – this cabin is super talented!

Alumni Tidbits!

Posted by on June 26, 2012

We are fortunate to have guest writers contribute to the blog this summer.  This Week’s Alumni Tibits comes from Alice Decker Burke.  Alice currently lives in Chicago with her family and clerks for a federal Judge. Alice wanted to let parents know if this is your daughter’s first summer or 5th summer, they are having a blast!!!

“I first went to camp when I was ten years old.  With ten more summers to follow, that first summer is now a blur of happy memories. I went to camp that first year on recommendation of a girl friend who was returning for her third summer at age ten – so everyone knew her.  But she was the only person I knew.  An only child, I was terribly worried about whether I would make friends, and whether I could live with other kids. I needn’t have worried.  I loved my cabin from the minute I walked in, even though the returning campers groaned that they got hilltop. I loved the bunks – an only child never gets bunks!  And there were lots of new kids, all nervous just like me.

And from there, we were off and running. I remember loving riding. I remember the envious sighs that I passed out of swimming in just one session, followed by the giggles that anyone could be as bad as me at tennis. I remember sliding down the hilltop hill in a rainstorm, hilariously muddy. I remember my cabin mates begging for me to eat faster so we could get dessert, so my counselor Rachel drew awesome cartoons to distract everyone while I ate.   I remember group groans for woodland wear – the infamous yellow and brown.  And I remember my parents coming up at four weeks, and asking if I wanted to stay the last three (yep, I’m old enough that I was in the seven-week generation). Did I want to stay?  Who wouldn’t want to stay?  And stay I did. For year after happy year thereafter. “
