How’s the food at Camp?? Mmm.Mmm.Awesome!

DSC07475The food at camp can be a cause of concern for parents and campers alike, but for different reasons. Kids wonder if there will be anything they like to eat, and parents may worry about healthy food choices or specific dietary needs. The meals at camp strike a balance between kid friendly favorites and delicious home cooked goodness! The majority of meals are served family style in cabin groups, which fosters the sense of community that makes Woodland so special.

Woodland has an awesome chef who uses quality ingredients to create delicious meals and home made baked goods. Dan spoils us with plenty of choices. There is something for everyone including vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free options if there is a need. Allergy to peanuts or tree nuts can be handled to a certain extent as well.

Sysco Foods is our main food distributer, and they provide us with meats such as:

  • Antibiotic free chicken
  • 100% juice for breakfast
  • Fresh fruits -Served at least twice daily
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Real Wisconsin butter
  • Beverages with no high fructose corn syrup just to name a few!

DSC07476 What are the camp favorites you might ask? Fair warning…do not get between a Woodland girl and her Taco Bar! Enough said. Other favorites include homemade Pizza night, Lasagna, Salad Bar with home made Mac and Cheese and Breadsticks, Roast Turkey…the list is endless! So, don’t be surprised if your camper comes home asking for you to duplicate the awesome meals at camp!

Birthdays at Camp Woodland Are Really Special!

As the last week of camp winds downs, I start thinking about all the magical memories during camp.  I have to admit my favorite camp memory this summer was all the summer birthdays we got to celebrate.  There were over 9 birthdays and each one of them was so very special.  I have to believe that a returning camper only hopes they will have a cabin mate with a summer birthday (If they don’t have a birthday themselves).

What makes camp birthdays so special is by all the attention they receive on their special day. The camper’s birthday is announced at morning assembly, and the whole camp sings Happy Birthday while the birthday girl runs around the circle.  Depending on the summer, the birthday girl may get a birthday badge to wear or a funny birthday hat with candles on top. This summer we had a birthday cake statue that we put on the birthday girl’s table.  When the girls sit at the table, the motion sensor goes off and the birthday song starts playing.  The girls find it hysterical!

After evening activity, the birthday girl and her entire cabin enjoy a birthday party. At Camp Woodland we make them a traditional angel food cake with a sparkler for a candle!   It is probably one of the most traditional things I love about camp!

This summer was very special for my daughter, Maddie.  Maddie got to celebrate her very first birthday at camp!  Looking back I never dreamed that I would have a daughter at camp during her first year of life!  JoAnne kept asking me if Maddie’s birthday was special and my response was, Maddie thinks everyday at camp is special.  She is adored by all, learning new things every day, and feeling so loved!   If I get my way, Maddie will get to celebrate her birthday every summer at camp!

Camp Packages

The big question parents are asking me is, “Lee, what type of package should I send my daughter”?  That is a very good question……We always recommend sending a package that all the girls in your daughter’s cabin can enjoy. This summer the girls are really into crafting.  Not just any crafting but with different colors of Duck Tape!  They have made bows for their hair and other really neat crafts.  I was even told that Towering Pines made wallets from different colors of duck tape. Pretty creative if you ask me!!  One summer a cabin was very into knitting and a parent sent up an entire box filled with beautiful colored yarn and knitting needles.

The girls are also really into reading this summer and have a cabin book that is read to them every night before bed.  It might be fun to send a collection of your favorite children’s books that they would enjoy.

Campers also really love getting regular mail. They look forward to  a bunk note or even just a post card.  They love hearing their name called out in their cabin that  are special enough to receive a letter.
If you have not signed up for bunk notes or want to learn more about it, please send me an email to: campwoodlandtp@gmail.com
Happy shopping and writing!

Check out this great video on “what parents need to know,” by Bob Ditter, a well know adolescent therapist. The video was produced by the American Camping Association to prepare parents on the value of sharing information about their child to help give them a great experience at camp.

Packing Tip #5 – Backpacks at Camp!

Posted by on June 20, 2012

At Camp Woodland, campers have the choice of picking 3 activities in the morning and 3 activities in the afternoon. To ensure campers get the most out their time in each activity, they will need a backpack to carry all of their personal items Backpacks are great because they can hold a water bottle, swim suit, towel, and any other extra clothes for each activity.  Make sure it is big enough because some campers like to put other essential items like sunscreen and favorite books!
Thanks for tuning in to our “Packing Tips” over the past two weeks.  We hope these tips were helpful and eased the packing experience!
