How’s the food at Camp?? Mmm.Mmm.Awesome!

DSC07475The food at camp can be a cause of concern for parents and campers alike, but for different reasons. Kids wonder if there will be anything they like to eat, and parents may worry about healthy food choices or specific dietary needs. The meals at camp strike a balance between kid friendly favorites and delicious home cooked goodness! The majority of meals are served family style in cabin groups, which fosters the sense of community that makes Woodland so special.

Woodland has an awesome chef who uses quality ingredients to create delicious meals and home made baked goods. Dan spoils us with plenty of choices. There is something for everyone including vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free options if there is a need. Allergy to peanuts or tree nuts can be handled to a certain extent as well.

Sysco Foods is our main food distributer, and they provide us with meats such as:

  • Antibiotic free chicken
  • 100% juice for breakfast
  • Fresh fruits -Served at least twice daily
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Real Wisconsin butter
  • Beverages with no high fructose corn syrup just to name a few!

DSC07476 What are the camp favorites you might ask? Fair warning…do not get between a Woodland girl and her Taco Bar! Enough said. Other favorites include homemade Pizza night, Lasagna, Salad Bar with home made Mac and Cheese and Breadsticks, Roast Turkey…the list is endless! So, don’t be surprised if your camper comes home asking for you to duplicate the awesome meals at camp!

We are enjoying the very warm weather and the girls are super hydrating!

This week and next week is Nature Week!  The girls are enjoying fishing, learning about ecology in our famous Hemlock forest, Moss Garden at Towering Pines, and the Woodland Bog.  We are off to a great week and Mera M already caught a blue gill and a crappie!

Spirit Horses!

We have a great time in first hour riding, which is the most advanced riding class. Last week Suzanne and I, along with all of the girls in 1st hour, created a new activity we call spirit horses. It all started when we realized how Daphne B’s personality matches perfectly with one of the horses in the Woodland Barn, Rashad. All of us soon started naming off our “spirit horses.” By the end of the day we had all chosen horses that we felt connected to and also who had similar personalities as us. We decided that the next day we would emulate our horses by dressing in the style of each of their personalities. Each of us then took turns having a photo shoot with our horses. All of us had such a blast doing this silly activity and we even have a poster of our photos up in the barn!

Captain’s Log – Sail Race

We were able to peak into  Sailing Counselor, Suzanne, Capatain’s Log and found this particularly interesting entry about the first sail race:

Second Period begins with the ringing of the bell.

July 4, 2013… the first Towering Pines- Woodland SDSC07326ail Race of the summer

The five minutes to start whistle is blown. The wind dies. Course: 1, 3, 2, 3, 1. At the one minute mark the wind picks up.

The four boats cross the starting line. Similar tacks by all. At The buoy rounding is when the clear the division in ranks is made.  Boats are crossing courses to the next mark.

Rules being called out- “Buoy Room” “Leeward over Windward” “Starboard over Port” “Overtaken over Overtaking”

The race goes on… they head for the finish. Two boats are in front.  Chelsea skippering I Spy with crew of Mera and Daphne comes in first. In second and a long shot ahead of the third place: Boat was skipper Paige and crew Colette and Regina.  Eventually crossing the line was Mike’s boat with Jack, Santi, and Kate… This happened while the last boat finished rounding the last buoy. Matt, Diego and Jess were pinching their sails while heading downwind… could be the explanation for the fourth place finish.

Third Period ends with the bell.

Overall it was a beautiful day for a race. Woodland wins. Better luck next time TP.
