Ode to the Counselor – in – Training

Posted by on August 4, 2012

You may hear of them often during the summer. They are not entirely a camper but not yet a counselor. Yes, we are talking about the wonderful, dutiful, Counselors-in-training otherwise known as the CITS.  The CITs have a very important job: learning what is to be a counselor and still have fun being a camper.  The girls took their job very seriously this summer.  The got to assist a class during the day, help out in the office, help little girls water ski, hand out canteen at the beach, and write about the day’s events in the Officer of the day log.  Check out Alex’s very creative log entry – She raps about her day:

The CITS also get to be the stars of the much anticipated Co-ed show!!! The Co-ed show is a mix between a musical and variety show describing the funny events of the summer at both Woodland and Towering Pines.  The boy and girl CITs get together over a course of 2.5 weeks during the evenings to practice singing, dance moves, and their lines. This year’s Co-ed show theme was “That Camp Show.”   Opening was Thursday night and the CITs were hamming it up as usual. The Co-Ed show started out with the theme song from “That 70’s show” called Hello, Wisconsin!  The rest of the show was funny, witty, with a lot of great songs that tied the whole show together.    At the end of the show we had a slide show of all the best pictures of the summer at both camps.  The kids love seeing themselves in their glory and it also signifies an end to another wonderful summer in the Northwoods.
Parents, this show should not be missed.   The next Co-Ed show performance will this Saturday night at 7:30pm at the Towering Pines Rec. Hall.

Camp: From the Point of View of a First Year Camper

Posted by on July 11, 2012

Emily from Hilltop wanted to let everyone know about her summer at camp thus far.  This is her first summer at Camp Woodland! Emily is 12 years old, from a suburb of Milwaukee, and found out about camp from our website (Also, her mom loves Eagle River, WI!!!).

Check out what she wrote below (no editing necessary):

“When you arrive at camp for the first time, it feels kind of strange as is true with all other new experiences.  You don’t know anyone but everyone knows each other.  You wonder if you will fit in and if the food will be good.  It is a little intimidating…..
But everyone is so nice, all the activities are really fun, and yes the food is really good!!  And even though, it is my first summer here, I feel like I have known these girls forever.
I came here an only child, but I think that when I leave, I will have gained about 51 sisters.  I can’t wait for the rest of the summer!!!”
Thanks Emily for your amazing point of view!

Week #3 – Camp is flying by!!

Posted by on July 10, 2012

It is hard to believe that it is already the 3rd week of camp.  The girls are feeling very comfortable at camp.  Maybe it is because all the girls know each other’s names and so much more.  The girls are ready to learn how to work together to accomplish big goals within their cabin!
We just finished our first session of activities (each session is two weeks) and the girls got to take pride in their newly developed dance, drama, and gymnastics skills by putting on a show during evening activity.  You could tell the girls were a little hesitant about performing in front of the entire camp, but after the shows they were smiling from ear to ear.   You could see them physically glowing, because they were able to do their front handstand, improve their dance steps, and hit all of their lines in drama!   Did I mention that they had to do all of their shows in front of over 40 campers and parents, Amazing!!

This week we are focusing on problem solving!  We sent a group of highly experienced sailors on Explorer’s North yesterday.  Explorer’s North is a 4-day sailing expedition on Lake Superior.  They leave from Bayfield, WI and venture around the Apostle Islands, become junior park rangers, and gain the knowledge of sailing as team on a beautiful sailboat.   It is a trip of a lifetime!!!

Silverbirch and Tamarack are going on their canoe trip this week!  Canoe trips are invigorating for the girls because they get to explore the lake, learn how to setup a campsite, and even help cook their meals on an open campfire.  I love to see the girls return the next day because their cabin unity is stronger than ever. They have all these “inside” cabin jokes, and they are so proud themselves that they canoed, camped, and had a blast!!

Enjoy your week because our campers are definitely enjoying theirs!!

Video Blog of the week – Gymnastics Show Tonight!!!

Posted by on July 7, 2012

Today is the last day of the first two week signup at  camp! Tonight the girls get to show off their amazing skills by putting on a gymnastics, dance, and drama shows in front of the entire camp.  I am lucky enough to get to watch the girls practice almost everyday since the gymnastics mats are right by the office.  Click the link below for a little sneak preview of both Elena and Cayley practicing no handed back flips with just a little assistance from our amazing nurse.  Nurse Lauren was a college gymnast and worked as a counselor at a gymnastics camp for many years.   We are so very lucky to have such a special nurse!

One…two…three…stroke!

One…two…three…stoke!

As you all know, having new experiences and cabin unity are two main cornerstones here at Camp Woodland.  What better way to discover yourself and face new experiences than to go out into the wilderness with only sleeping bags, tents, food, and a roll of toilet paper.  The canoe trips are a special night for the campers. They get to paddle across the lake and spend the night with their cabin away from camp.

So far this summer we have had two very exciting canoeing trips!  The Sunrise cabin consists of campers ages 8-9 also had their canoe trip challenge, where several of the girls discovered a new activity that they just can’t wait to explore more…CANOEING!  Everyone got a chance bow (front) and stern (back) in their canoe. Even though this trip was much shorter, it was still equally rewarding.  We packed up our sleeping bags, tents…and yes, a roll of toilet paper, and headed off into the abyss, known as the boat landing. The girls enjoyed setting up their own tents (with some assisted instruction), cooking dinner and breakfast over the fire, having an evening swim, singing around the campfire with guitar accompaniment, and building many memories that will no doubt be shared during their future canoe trips.

The CITs went on a long, exciting paddle beginning at Chain Lake, through Echo Lake, to Stone Lake, and finally through the channel ending at Sand Lake, where we were all ready to set up camp. When we made it to the campsite we quickly started a fire and setup tents with little to no problem.  Then, it was dinnertime, which of course was cooked over the campfire. The rest of the night was spent around the campfire, telling stories, singing camp songs, and the most desired aspect of the canoe trips…roasting s’mores!

Thank you Katie for taking  the cabins out this summer!!!
